Overview

The Spezi Bluetooth and Devices features allow for secure connection to Bluetooth devices, including custom medical devices. It allows for retrieval and writing of data from different services; in other words, it provides an avenue of communication between the digital health app and the bluetooth device. It also ensures that non-authorized devices do not connect with the app or access confidential information.

Spezi apps can connect and obtain data from a wide variety of bluetooth devices, with several examples below.

Features

Measurements with Common Medical Devices

Digital health apps previously built with our Spezi modules highlight the wide variety of devices that can easily be connected to mobile apps to collect user data. Common measurements, such as measuring blood pressure, can be obtained by connecting generic blood pressure cuffs to the user's device.

Shown to the right, the NeuroNest application connects with an electroencephalogram (EEG) over bluetooth to collect data on which areas of the brain are activated, as one metric to assess neurodevelopment. The collection of this data can be seen in real time.

Features

Measurements with Custom Devices

Spezi is also compatible with newer, custom devices that allow bluetooth connection.

The Stanford Digital Health team and the Bronte-Stewart Lab developed a new platform named QDG-Care, which assists Parkinson's patients collect quantitative data of their motor abilities at home. The data collected gets added to their electronic health record, allowing healthcare providers to view and update their patients' therapy or medication in real time.

QDG-Care uses KeyDuo, a Bluetooth-enabled digitography device that provides validated metrics of PD symptoms from just 30 seconds of repetitive alternative finger tapping. The patient can connect the device to their phones, and the data will be collected by the QDG-Care mobile app. Especially for patients who may have mobility issues, being able to give regular progress reports without having to do lengthy tests in the clinic is pivotal for providing more comprehensive care.

Integration with Other Modules

Spezi Bluetooth can be configured from within any other Spezi Module, encouraging more seamless and flexible integration of necessary external devices.
